THE BRIEF
The objective was to create a contemporary stainless steel jewellery collection that felt:
Sculptural but wearable | Modern but timeless | Bold but refined
Gender-inclusive | Durable for everyday wear | Commercially viable
The collection was developed around clean architectural forms, polished and brushed surfaces, considered proportions and versatile silhouettes, with each piece designed to work independently while maintaining a cohesive NOMA identity
Stainless steel was selected as the core material, allowing the collection to combine durability, structural strength,
controlled weight & refined finishing with a more accessible contemporary jewellery positioning
OUR APPROACH
-
Each NOMA piece was developed from initial concept into a technically viable stainless steel jewellery product, establishing the functional and physical requirements before detailed design and prototyping.
+ Product Definition: Jewellery type, intended wearer, application, scale and positioning established for each piece.
+ Form & Proportion: Overall dimensions, silhouette, profile, curvature, thickness and volume developed in relation to the body.
+ Wearability: Weight distribution, contact points, articulation, edge profiles and movement assessed for prolonged wear.
+ Structural Requirements: Load-bearing areas, connection points, openings, closures and component interfaces defined from the outset.
+ Stainless Steel Construction: Material behaviour considered in relation to forming, machining, casting, joining, polishing and finishing.
+ Component Integration: Chains, clasps, hinges, jump rings, posts and fastening systems incorporated into the product architecture.
+ Unisex Development: Proportions and scale developed to accommodate different wearers while maintaining the same NOMA design language.
+ Production Feasibility: Construction complexity, repeatability, tolerances, finishing requirements and anticipated manufacturing processes assessed before sampling.
The result was a fully defined product concept ready to progress into jewellery design, material development and physical prototyping.
-
Material development focused on stainless steel performance, durability, weight and surface treatment, ensuring each specification was suitable for jewellery production and repeated wear.
+ Steel Specification: Stainless steel grade selected according to corrosion resistance, hardness, skin contact and intended application.
+ Thickness & Weight: Wall thickness, band sections and component dimensions established to balance structural strength with comfortable wear.
+ Forming Behaviour: Material assessed for bending, forming, machining, drilling and component shaping according to the design.
+ Surface Finishing: High polish, satin, brushed and contrasting finishes developed according to the intended visual and tactile result.
+ Edges & Surfaces: Edge radii, transitions and contact surfaces refined for comfort and consistent finishing.
+ Component Compatibility: Chains, clasps, posts, hinges, jump rings and connecting elements specified for strength and material compatibility.
+ Durability: Resistance to corrosion, abrasion, tarnishing and everyday handling considered throughout material selection.
+ Production Requirements: Material tolerances, cutting allowances, machining requirements, polishing loss and finishing processes considered before sampling.
The result was a controlled stainless steel material specification designed for consistent, durable and repeatable jewellery production.
-
Each NOMA piece was developed through precise jewellery design engineering, refining the visual language while resolving the geometry, proportions and functional details required for stainless steel production.
+ Geometry & Form: Silhouette, diameter, profile, curvature, width and thickness defined for each piece.
+ Proportion & Scale: Dimensions developed in relation to the body, wear position and intended unisex application.
+ Structural Design: Load points, connection areas, openings, joints and component interfaces integrated into the jewellery form.
+ Edge Development: Edge radii, transitions, corners and contact surfaces refined for comfort, durability and controlled finishing.
+ Functional Details: Clasps, hinges, closures, posts, jump rings and connecting elements incorporated directly into the design.
+ Surface Architecture: Polished, brushed, satin and contrasting areas positioned to emphasise form and create visual depth.
+ Manufacturing Geometry: Minimum sections, internal clearances, assembly tolerances and finishing allowances considered during design.
+ Collection Cohesion: Each piece developed independently while maintaining NOMA’s architectural, gender-inclusive design language.
The result was a fully resolved jewellery design system ready for sampling, technical modelling and production development.
-
Each NOMA piece was physically prototyped to validate dimensions, construction, wearability and stainless steel performance before technical approval.
+ Prototype Development: Initial samples produced to confirm the digital design and physical geometry.
+ Dimensions: Diameter, width, thickness, curvature, openings and component relationships checked against specifications.
+ Fit & Wear: Ring sizing, cuff openings, necklace lengths, earring positioning and body contact points tested during wear.
+ Weight & Balance: Overall weight and distribution assessed to prevent discomfort or excessive load on specific areas.
+ Function: Clasps, hinges, posts, chains, jump rings and connecting mechanisms tested for operation and security.
+ Surface Finish: Polish, brushing, satin finishes, edge definition and transitions reviewed on the physical sample.
+ Durability: Connections, moving components and high-contact areas assessed for structural integrity and repeated use.
+ Design Refinement: Dimensional, functional and aesthetic corrections transferred back into the technical model before production approval.
-
The approved NOMA designs were translated into precise production specifications and technical models, defining the geometry, tolerances, construction and finishing requirements for stainless steel manufacture.
+ CAD Development: Final 3D geometry developed with controlled dimensions, profiles, curves and component relationships.
+ Dimensional Specifications: Thickness, diameter, width, internal clearances, openings and connection points defined for each piece.
+ Tolerances: Manufacturing tolerances established for critical dimensions, moving components and component interfaces.
+ Construction: Clasps, hinges, posts, jump rings, chains and connection systems technically resolved.
+ Surface Specifications: Polish, satin, brushed and contrasting finishes documented by component and surface.
+ Assembly: Component sequence, joining points and assembly requirements defined for repeatable production.
+ Manufacturing Allowances: Cutting, forming, machining, polishing and finishing allowances incorporated into the technical models.
+ Production Files: Final CAD files, dimensional references and technical specifications prepared for manufacturing and quality control.
The result was a complete technical package allowing each NOMA piece to be reproduced accurately and consistently in production.
-
Sourcing focused on securing stainless steel, jewellery components and specialist finishing capabilities that met NOMA’s technical specifications and production requirements.
+ Stainless Steel: Grade, thickness, sheet/wire/tube availability and surface condition specified according to each component.
+ Components: Chains, clasps, posts, hinges, jump rings, connectors and fastening systems sourced to the required dimensions and load requirements.
+ Supplier Capability: Forming, CNC machining, casting, laser cutting, welding, polishing and finishing capabilities assessed according to each design.
+ Surface Finishing: Suppliers evaluated for consistent mirror polish, satin, brushing and controlled surface transitions.
+ Tolerances: Supplier capability reviewed against the dimensional tolerances required for component fit and assembly.
+ Durability: Corrosion resistance, hardness, surface stability and suitability for repeated skin contact considered during supplier selection.
